Why CollieMoji is jumping into the Subscription app model

It’s been a while since our last update. You probably notice it. Exactly 8 months without new border collie emojis. Yes, that sucks. 

As many of you know, CollieMoji started as a personal project and true love to my border collie Kala back in 2017. The app was published with just 30 emojis available only for iOS. The acceptance was really good and we got so many positive reviews that we’ve decided to move forward and keep working on it. ¿The result? More than 150 emojis, android version, a site for personalized emojis and tons of app bugs smashed.

But all that effort was giving us only “collie proud”. We were always dancing on the break even point (no loss, no gain). The sales from $1.99 didn’t always cover the maintenance expenses on functional services, administrative services, infrastructure services (servers, CDN, etc.) and IT support services. Moreover the new features on the emoji artwork and code development. iOS and Android are always updating their versions and we must follow the new requirements.

Stop the app development and keep it to the basic (removing the keyboard, imessage and major features) and at one moment removing the app from the Store OR.. make it serious, building a real app. An app that is constantly updated with new emojis, features and integrated in all the OS versions. That would move the app from paid once lifetime to subscriptions as ongoing basis. It would take more work and effort but it’s the only way to include new emojis and features monthly. We choose the last option.

It was a hard decision because it will change not only the revenue model, it also implies an investment on the actual colliemoji app. So we’ve decided to open the app for everyone to try it for free (including some emojis). There will be also an upgrade with unlimited access for subscribers. In that way, we can provide ongoing value to you and continually innovating the app experience. 



What exactly changes for you?

If you update the app, you will open it as a new user. You’ll have access to some free emojis and features. If you want to use the app unlimited, you will need to subscribe for a $2.49/ month. We know, it can seem exaggerated, but the advantages are much bigger than the actual colliemoji (we didn’t include emojis or features for 8 months).

How much does a subscription cost?

The prices vary by country, so please check the price displayed for you at the moment. The official settled price is $2.49 per month but it can vary due to each country taxes. Prices are equal to the value that “Apple’s App Store Matrix” determines is the equivalent of the subscription price in US Dollar.


Can you use CollieMoji for free? Is there a free trial?

Yes, CollieMoji will be available for free on a limited version. You still will have access to the app, keyboard, imessage, photo editor but to only 10 emojis. There will be also a 3 days free trial with unlimited access.


What are the terms of auto-renewing subscriptions?

– You can subscribe for unlimited access to all CollieMoji content
– The subscription price is $2.49 per month after 3 days free trial.
– You’ll get unlimited access to all content for the duration of your subscription.
– Payment will be charged to iTunes / Google Account at confirmation of purchase.
– Subscription automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least one day before the next renewal.
– Account will be charged for renewal within 24-hours prior to the end of the current period at the cost of the chosen subscription.
– Subscriptions may be managed by the user and auto-renewal may be turned off by going to the user’s Account Settings after purchase.
– No cancellation of the current subscription is allowed during active subscription period.
– Any unused portion of a free trial period will be deleted when the user purchases a subscription to that content.

When is the update going to happen?

We are testing the final version on iOS and Android and we’ll publish the official update on November 18th week.It can suffer some variations due to external parties as Apple apps review team. We are going to release the update in 7 days for automatic updates just to give you more time in case you don’t want to upgrade.

What happens if you don’t want to subscribe?

We completely understand if you don’t want to subscribe. It’s a personal decision. We only want you to understand why we must jump to subscription in order to keep the app alive. If you have the app installed, you can still use all the actual features unless you upload the app. We recommend you to turn-off the automatic updates (Settings > App Store) to avoid an unwanted update. If you don’t want to turn them off, we strongly recommend you to download all the emojis in your phone gallery. In that way you can use them anytime for free and without the app installed. Please be aware that we can’t give tech support for old versions.


How do you cancel your subscription?

We’re sorry to see you go! But it’s easy: go to your iPhone Settings, tap your Apple ID (the section with your name at the top), tap ‘iTunes & App Store’, tap your Apple ID (the section in blue at the top)), tap View Apple ID, tap Subscriptions, tap on the subscription you wish to cancel and confirm.

If you are an Android user, you have to go to Play Store > Menu > Subscriptions and tap CollieMoji. There you only need to scroll and tap on “Cancel subscription”.
